Ob man ihn nun als genialen Geschäftsmann betrachtet oder als ruhmsüchtigen Überflieger, Sir Richard Branson ist einer der erfolgreichsten Unternehmer der Welt. Angespornt durch seine erfolgreiche Mutter und seine Tante, die aus dem Nichts erfolgreiche Unternehmen aufgebaut hatten, trat Branson mit nur 16 Jahren ins Geschäftsleben ein. Fünf Jahre später eröffnete er eine Plattenladen-Kette: Virgin Megastores. Danach startete er das Plattenlabel Virgin Records. Im Laufe der 1980er und 90er Jahre erweiterte er die Virgin-Gruppe um Virgin Atlantic Airlines; Virgin mobile phones; Virgin Trains; und nun, Virgin Galactic, ein Unternehmen für den Weltalltourismus. Durch den Erfolg seines Geschäftsimperiums konnte sich Branson einer anderen Leidenschaft widmen: Rekorde zu setzen - zu Wasser und in der Luft. Seine Rekordversuche verband er eng mit der Marke Virgin. Das brachte ihm immer wieder Gratiswerbung in Millionenhöhe. Aber er hat auch ein idealistisches Motiv. Die Reduzierung des Treibstoffverbrauchs ist für ihn eine wichtige Mission. Sein Flugzeug wird für die Weltumrundung nur neun Tonnen Treibstoff brauchen - im Gegensatz zu für gewöhnlich annähernd 1.500 Tonnen. "As an airline being able to develop a plane that is capable to fly round the world using the latest technology and latest composites we believe could be pioneering aviation for the future." "This plane will fly around the world if it's successful only using nine tons of fuel. Our other planes would use about one and a half thousand tons of fuel so it shows the enormous leap forward in technology." Aber er war nicht immer ein Umweltaktivist, erst seit kurzem hat er die Gefahr erkannt - und will dazu beitragen den CO2-Ausstoß zu reduzieren. "I think that the real worry about global warming is something which has only really lit up in the last couple of years. I am guilty of it; I haven't fully appreciated the dangers until the last 12 months, 18 months. Now I realise the dangers, I know we got to do something about it. We've got to spend money investing in alternative fuels and in the meantime we have got to cut our CO2 emissions as dramatically as we possibly can." Branson ist bekannt für sein gesellschaftliches Engagement. Sein erstes Wohltätigkeitsprojekt startete er mit 17 Jahren. Vor kurzem hat er in Südafrika die "Branson School of Entrepreneurship" gegründet. Das wundervolle Afrika habe es verdient, unterstützt zu werden und niemand wisse wie erfolgreich Afrika in der Zukunft sein könne. "I think that Africa is a wonderful place and it’s been through so much misery and a lot of it so unnecessary and so much affliction. And Tell said something wonderful earlier, he mentioned all these hand-outs from America but he actually ended by saying empires do not last forever and maybe in 50 or 60 or 70 years time America will be coming hat-in-hand to South Africa." Branson findet auch immer wieder Zeit, als „Frontman" von Virgin Gastrollen in Filmen zu übernehmen: Er spielte in einem "Bond", bei "Superman" und vielen anderen Fernsehserien. "It is strange for me being a business man and an entrepreneur. I've had some wonderful invites to appear in different films, I've been in the Bond film this year and I have also done the Superman film, where we took off in a Virgin Galactic space ship and we were attacked by the baddies, and my son and I were flying this spaceship, and then little spots in things like ' Friends ' and 'Baywatch' and 'Only Fools and Horses.' I suppose I spend a lot of my life being the front man for Virgin and doing a bit of acting, so it is quite fun to do a bit of real acting for a change."
